A Parent's Guide to Supporting a Child with Dyscalculia

Parenting a child with a learning disability can be a lonely and bewildering experience. It’s difficult to find good information and support for dyscalculia. It is no wonder parents feel confused, anxious, and overwhelmed.

Every day after school my daughter would slump into the backseat of our car, exhausted.

After years of extra help at school she continued to struggle. The school lacked the knowledge and training on how to support a student with this learning disability. Their standard approach was to follow traditional teaching methods but slower and with more repetition.

That approach wasn’t working – it only led to frustration, anxiety, and exhaustion.

I knew there had to be a better way.

Searching for Answers

I began to ask questions, read books and articles by dyscalculia experts, explore alternative teaching methods, and receive help from educators in the field.

This quest began when my daughter was 9 years old. Today she is 18, successfully navigating high school and enrolled at her first choice university for next year.

But we didn’t just happen upon where we are now. It has been a long, winding journey of ups and downs.

After navigating this trail for the past 9 years, I want to tell you:

There is information, resources, and teaching methods available on dyscalculia that will make a world of difference for your family, and your dyscalculic child. You can make it out of the confusion and overwhelm. And gain more understanding, confidence, and clarity on how to move forward.

Three Important Steps

These are my personal recommendations for you, based on my family’s experience and from walking with hundreds of other families on a similar journey.

  • Start with understanding dyscalculia, what it is and how it impacts.

  • Identify the specific needs of your dyscalculic learner.

  • Clarify your next steps to helping them thrive.

In this free guide, I’ll help unpack each of these steps.
