Homeschooling with Dyscalculia

Laura M. Jackson, parent, author, dyscalculia specialist

Hello. My name is Laura Jackson, mom of a daughter diagnosed with dyscalculia, and now dyscalculia author, consultant, and specialist, passionate about supporting homeschool families on the lonely and confusing journey of dyscalculia.

As part of our journey, I homeschooled my daughter’s math class for three years. It was one of the most transformational decisions we made.

Now I support other families who are ready to try a better way. They want to really understand their child’s unique learning disability, help their child develop a sense for numbers and math, and grow their child’s self-advocacy and understanding of themselves.

Our Story

  • Much of our beginning days I’ve shared in my book, Discovering Dyscalculia: one family’s journey with a math disability. I highly encourage you to get a copy. It is everything I wanted to know, and couldn’t easily find, when I was first learning about dyscalculia.

  • I wrote the book in 2021 when we were in the middle of homeschooling math. So in 2025, I wrote an overview of our homeschooling experience in this blog here.

  • I have also written a series of 16+ articles (and podcast recorded) with details about the teaching strategies, books, materials, and supports we used. That resource is being update on my website and will be available November 2026 as the Dyscalculia Guidebook. This guides homeschooling parents on the overall teaching strategies for dyscalculia, answer dyscalculia curriculum questions, and recommends specific books and materials for teaching math to students with a math learning disability.

  • My Number-Sense-Support program (below) is personalized support for parents who want to begin math intervention at home for their child. It follows the exact books and uses the same teaching strategies we found out of the UK. It is Step-by-Step Weekly Lesson Plans + Games & Activities + Online Group Coaching.

 Reviews of this workshop

*

"This has been fantastic! I love the prepared lessons. I don't have any other feedback other than I want to keep going with this... It's much easier for me to tutor them with this activity based math vs. taking them to someone else."

*

"Having the lesson plans laid out for me saved me hours and hours of reading and planning and possibly going in the wrong direction if I were to tackle it on my own."

*

"I truly appreciate your lessons. It’s really helped my confidence."

*

“I am finally doing something to help my kid with their learning difference, starting with the foundation to have a true understanding is really great."

*

“I wanted to thank you and share that your workshop has been great and has helped me better understand dyscalculia and what people experience.”

Number-Sense Support

for parents and educators

Help your student develop number-sense with lessons and activities you can do at home.

Who is this for? Parents working with a dyscalculic student who would like personalized support and help with lessons and games to help their student develop a better understanding of number. The target age of students is 5-12 years old. (Contact me if your student is older to discuss options.) Requires no teaching experience.

How does this work? We will meet weekly, beginning with an introduction class and continuing with six weeks of Lesson Plans. Each week, you will receive a printable PDF lesson plan with games and activities to do with your student 3-5 times that week. Parents and educators will meet weekly with me on Zoom for 1 hour, where I will walk you through each lesson, answer any questions, and check in on how the lessons are going. You will repeat the lesson and activities with your student for about 20-30 minutes each day, for 3-5 days with your student.

What materials will we be using? Our main guide in this unit will be Ronit Bird’s book, Exploring Numbers through Dot Patterns. We will cover foundational math concepts dyscalculics don't innately understand - critical concepts that keep them from grasping grade level math. We will explore some of these foundational numeracy concepts in a multi-sensory and engaging way such as: specific visuals for number 1-10, how numbers are inside other numbers, what makes a number even/odd, regrouping quantities, ways to make 10, quantity, exchange, plus and minus one, double and half, key facts.

What supplies will I need? You will need some basic learning materials such as dice, counters, cards, and access to a printer for gameboards and lessons. (You will also need to purchase Ronit Bird’s ebook, Exploring Numbers Through Dot Patterns, about $12).

What is included:

  • Six printable step-by-step lesson plans including games and activities. Each weekly lesson or activity should be repeated in 3-5 sessions during that week. This gives you 18-30 individual math intervention sessions planned for you.

  • Group coaching with me in weekly live Zoom calls, 1 hour each. Ask questions, check in on how lessons are going with your student. Troubleshoot any sticking points.

  • Call replays will be available for a limited time (only during the duration of the workshop) for those who can’t make the live call.

Workshops:

  • Number-Sense Support | Weeks 1-6 covers the first half of Ronit Bird’s ebook, 6 weeks of lesson plans

  • Number-Sense Support | Weeks 7-12 completes the rest of Ronit Bird’s ebook, 6 weeks of lesson plans. Available to those who have completed the first 6 weeks.

Dates:

  • Number-Sense Support | Weeks 1-6 begins TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 10:00-11:00am PST (Seattle time). Click on this link for a time zone translator to see what time this is for you. We will meet every Tuesday for 7 weeks. We will begin with an introduction, then 6 weeks of Lesson Plans. Dates are: November 3, 10, 17, 24, December 1, 8, 15. Classes are recorded for those who miss.

  • Number-Sense Support | Weeks 7-12 begins January 5, 2027. Details to come.

What is the cost?

$75 USD per week ($525 USD total). Split into two monthly credit card payments of $262.50 USD each.

If this is unaffordable, please contact me in form below to inquire about a discounted rate for those in need.

How much money will this save me? If you do the weekly lesson and activity 4 times each week with your student, you are only paying $22 for each math tutoring session! Most dyscalculia tutoring sessions cost $85-$150. Plus you will learn so much about your student’s experience as a dyscalculic learner, and be better equipped to advocate for what they need!

Is this for me? Here are some options to confirm this as your next best step:
